British clipper ship. Built on the River Clyde, Glasgow, Scotland in 1869 for the Jock Willis Shipping Line, she was one of the last tea clippers to be built and one of the fastest, coming at the end of a long period of design development, which halted as sailing ships gave way to steam propulsion.

ITALY

AMERIGO VESPUCCI

Tall ship of the Italian Navy named after the famous explorer. Its home port is La Spezia, and it is in use as a school ship. Most of her training cruises are in European waters, but she has also sailed to North and South America, navigated the Pacific, and in 2002 also undertook a voyage around the world. In 1962, the aircraft carrier USS Independence signaled to the Amerigo Vespucci: “You are the most beautiful ship in the world” when they crossed paths at sea.

ENGLAND

SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS

17th-century warship of the English Navy. She was ordered as a 90-gun first-rate ship of the line of the English Royal Navy, but at launch was armed with 102 bronze guns at the insistence of the king. It was later renamed Sovereign, and then Royal Sovereign. The ship was launched on 13 October 1637 and served from 1638 until 1697, when a fire burnt the ship to the waterline at Chatham.

ENGLAND

Ark ROYAL

English galleon, originally ordered for Sir Walter Raleigh and later purchased by the crown for service in the Tudor navy. She was used as the English flagship in a number of engagements, including the battles that resulted in the defeat of the Spanish Armada, and had a long career spanning over 50 years. Her fame led to a number of later warships of the Royal Navy being named Ark Royal in her honor, including a number of flagships of the fleet.
